History & haunting lore

Muhammad I founded the red fortress in 1238, and successors added the Court of the Lions, Hall of the Ambassadors, and Generalife summer gardens before the 1492 Catholic conquest. Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra popularized legends of Moorish kings who never quite left.

Night visits to the Nasrid Palaces sell out months ahead, and guards know every story of sighing walls and a headless sultana on the Lindaraja balcony. The architecture itself — star-carved ceilings and whispering fountains — does half the haunting work.
