The Livonian Brothers of the Sword raised Cēsis at the edge of Christian expansion into Baltic pagan lands. Swedish and Russian sieges shattered the western tower, leaving a ruin that Latvia restored as a symbol of national identity after Soviet rule.
Visitors explore dungeons by candle lantern, a deliberate choice that casts jumping shadows on lime-washed walls. Staff lean into the atmosphere without claiming specific apparitions, letting the cold stone and echoing stairs suggest their own stories.
Current site status
Open year-round with shorter hours in winter; candle tours of the western tower have limited capacity and sell out on weekends.
