Early Christians and earlier peoples carved Derinkuyu into soft volcanic tuff, sinking eight open levels connected by narrow passages and rolling stone doors. Residents could seal entire sections against raiders while living underground for months with livestock and wine presses.
Tour groups descend only a fraction of the excavated network, yet even the lit portion triggers claustrophobia. Guides point out a cruciform church and confessionals carved from rock, spaces where candlelight once replaced any glimpse of the sun.
Current site status
Open daily with steep stairs and low ceilings; not suitable for visitors with severe claustrophobia or limited mobility.
