History & haunting lore

Constructed under Governor Nicolás de Ovando, the fortress's Torre del Homenaje served as a lookout and defensive stronghold against pirates for nearly five centuries and later held prisoners in its dungeons; Spanish conquests of Cuba, Mexico, and Peru were launched from this stretch of coastline. It is now part of the UNESCO-listed Colonial City of Santo Domingo.

Local guides note that the fort's dungeon cells, where prisoners were once chained for years at a time, carry a heavy atmosphere that some visitors describe as unsettling, though no formal paranormal investigation has ever been conducted at the site.

Current site status

Open daily to the public; visitors can climb the Torre del Homenaje for panoramic views over the Ozama River and the Colonial City.
