Highgate Cemetery West

Highgate Cemetery opened in 1839 and its original western section is one of London's 'Magnificent Seven' great Victorian cemeteries. The West Cemetery is celebrated for its dramatic funerary architecture — the Egyptian Avenue, the Circle of Lebanon with its ring of vaults around an ancient cedar, and the terrace catacombs — set among steep, deliberately romantic and now richly overgrown planting. It is the resting place of many notable Victorians, and its atmospheric decay has made it one of the most evocative historic landscapes in the capital.

The cemetery is closely linked to the so-called 'Highgate Vampire' episode of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when press coverage and rival self-styled ghost hunters fuelled claims of a tall, dark figure among the tombs. Visitors have long reported an uneasy atmosphere, shadowy shapes and sudden chills in the overgrown avenues. These accounts are anecdotal, and the vampire scare in particular is widely regarded as a media-driven sensation.

Seen clearly, Highgate West is remarkable for its art, horticulture and social history rather than any haunting. The conservation work that keeps its monuments and wildlife alive is the real story, and the site rewards a respectful, curious visit far more than a thrill-seeking one.

Highgate Cemetery is owned and run by the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust, a charity that conserves the grounds through admission income. The West Cemetery, with its Egyptian Avenue and Circle of Lebanon, is generally accessible only on a paid, pre-booked guided tour, while the East Cemetery can usually be visited with a standard ticket; opening times are seasonal and weather can affect access on the steep paths.

Highgate remains a working cemetery with ongoing burials and private graves, so visitors are asked to be respectful and quiet, keep to paths, avoid climbing on monuments and follow their guide's instructions throughout.
