History & haunting lore

The hospital served plague victims, sailors, and the poor of Spanish Cartagena for centuries, expanding through epidemics of yellow fever and cholera that killed thousands behind its thick walls. Closed as a working infirmary in the twentieth century, it now displays surgical tools, pharmacy jars, and arcaded courtyards where patients once lay in hammocks.

Night tours in the old city sometimes include the arcades, trading stories of a weeping nun and phantom patients seen in the pharmacy wing. The museum itself focuses on medical history, leaving the ghost lore to local guides.

Current site status

Open for museum visits during daytime hours within the historic center; access to some wings may vary during restoration work.
