Founded by conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba at the foot of the Momotombo volcano, the city thrived briefly before eruptions, economic decline, and a final catastrophic earthquake in 1610 forced its total abandonment. Buried under volcanic ash for centuries, the site was rediscovered in 1967 and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
Local tradition has long linked the city's downfall to a curse said to follow the 1526 execution of conquistador Hernández de Córdoba by his own rival, and guides recount the tale alongside the excavated cathedral, royal foundry, and colonial house foundations.
Current site status
Open daily to visitors with on-site guided tours of the excavated foundations; the site remains an active archaeological project.
