History & haunting lore

Greek authorities quarantined leprosy sufferers far from villages, following the medieval tradition of isolating "unclean" disease on offshore islands and remote hills. Chios's colony combined chapel, wards, and a cemetery whose wooden crosses have largely rotted away.

The buildings are officially closed but visible from coastal roads, and local historians campaign for preservation. Urban explorers who enter illegally describe peeling ward paint and rusted bed frames — a quieter horror than any ghost, rooted in stigma rather than spectacle.

Current site status

The ruin is not open for sanctioned tours and entering unstable buildings is dangerous and may be illegal; view from public roads only.
