Wernher von Braun's team launched the world's first ballistic missile here in 1942 while thousands of concentration camp prisoners died assembling weapons in underground tunnels. RAF Operation Hydra destroyed much of the plant in August 1943 but too late to stop the rocket program's transfer inland.
Power plant halls now exhibit engines and camp prisoner testimony side by side. Night visitors on special tours mention footsteps in empty corridors where SS offices once planned mass production of terror weapons.
Current site status
Open March through October with reduced winter hours; some outdoor display areas are exposed to Baltic weather.
