Preston Manor presents the early twentieth-century world of the Stanford family as a municipal historic-house museum in Brighton, with formal reception rooms, servants' corridors and domestic offices carefully preserved. The house evolved from earlier buildings on the Preston estate and was bequeathed for public benefit, becoming a showcase of Edwardian upstairs-downstairs life rather than a grand aristocratic palace. Daytime interpretation focuses on social history, servants' work and the material culture of a well-to-do coastal household.
Over decades the manor also gained a reputation among UK ghost-hunting groups for footsteps, cold spots and alleged apparitions in bedrooms and service areas. Brighton & Hove Museums frame ordinary visits as heritage; separately ticketed evening sessions are explicitly paranormal-themed. Reported experiences remain anecdotal and programme-dependent.
The house's value lies in its intact domestic narrative. Whether or not one attends an investigation evening, the documented Edwardian interior is the reliable draw.
Current site status
Preston Manor is part of Brighton & Hove Museums and opens on selected days with paid admission; paranormal evenings are separately booked. Confirm the current municipal schedule before travelling, as hours can change.
Please follow staff guidance in the historic rooms and treat both daytime heritage visits and evening events with care.
