History & haunting lore

Peasants from Râșnov raised the citadel above the Bârsa depression to survive Ottoman and Tatar raids, digging a legendary well 146 meters through solid rock during a siege. The fortress held civilian families, not just soldiers, blurring the line between castle and bunker.

Restoration added a museum and panoramic lift, yet fog still swallows the palisade on autumn mornings. Staff recount tales of a Turkish prisoner who dug the well in exchange for freedom — and of his ghost still searching for the surface.

Open daily year-round with a funicular option to the gate; winter ice on stone ramps can make the upper ward slippery.
