Hungarian kings, Polish nobles, and Habsburg garrisons expanded Spiš over centuries before a 1780 fire left the upper ward a romantic ruin. The lower fortifications house museums of medieval torture devices and period furnishings that lean into the grim side of castle life.
Fog often seals the hilltop from the village below, and staff closing the gate at dusk joke about the "White Lady" seen in the chapel arch. UNESCO listing protects the masonry, but the wind through empty arrow slits needs no embellishment.
Current site status
Open April through October with shorter winter weekends; steep paths connect multiple wards and comfortable shoes are essential.
