History & haunting lore

Only a handful of prisoners survived S-21, leaving classrooms divided into brick cells and walls of mugshot photographs that stare at visitors today. The regime meticulously recorded confessions before sending victims to the Choeung Ek killing fields.

The museum keeps bloodstains and iron bedframes in place as evidence. Cambodian guides, some of whom lost family to the regime, lead tours with devastating calm, and visitors often find the courtyard unnaturally quiet after leaving.
