History & haunting lore

Built by the Archbishop of Riga in 1214, Turaida guarded trade routes through the Gauja valley. The nineteenth-century legend of Maija, the "Rose of Turaida," tells of a gardener's daughter who sacrificed herself to prove a lover's fidelity — a tale now central to Latvian romantic folklore.

The castle museum and surrounding sculpture park draw summer crowds, but the birch woods below feel older than the masonry. Evening walkers near Gutmanis Cave, minutes away, still report seeing a woman in red among the trees.

Current site status

Open daily with separate tickets for the castle tower climb; the Gauja valley trails can be icy from November through March.
