Wyndham's corrugated-iron cells held men arrested under discriminatory colonial laws, often for leaving cattle stations or resisting forced labor. Heat, isolation, and disease made the gaol a symbol of frontier injustice long after it closed in the mid-twentieth century.
The building survives in a town many tourists only pass en route to the Bungle Bungles. Locals share stories of night watchmen hearing cell doors clang when the building was empty — anecdotes tied to a history the museum confronts directly.
